The Last Gift Bag

Yes, it’s true. We’ve had a lot of fun, we’ve given away a lot of gift bags, but it’s time for the party to end. The 2011 GBK Golden Globes Gift Bag is our very last one and it ends this Friday, March 18th. Unfortunately we simply do not have the resources to keep going. Wish we could, but we can’t.

Whatever credits you have saved up, now’s the time to use them! Let me say that again, use all your credits, because this is it. After Friday there will be no more. Click here if you haven’t entered.
Some thanks….
I’d like to take a moment and thank all of the people who have worked to bring our little webshow to you. We’ve had many people over the last two years help out and I appreciate every one of you, but I do want to call attention to a few special people:

- Kat and Kristen, our two main hosts, I feel lucky to have been able to have worked with you. You both sparkle on the screen and in life.

- Daniel who edited many of our later shows, you have a great talent and a great career ahead of you.

- Max, our tireless web developer, your genius knows no bounds.

- Anthony, our Chief Creative Officer, who directed and edited most of our shows. You know when he directed an episode because it looked like a real TV show. You are a consumate professional and a true friend. Without you this never, ever would have happened.

But my biggest thanks goes to you, our members and fans. We couldn’t have done it without you. On behalf of everyone here at Stylit.TV I want to thank all of you for your loyal participation and support.

Warmest thoughts and wishes to all of you,

Most of the top Asian models working today come from South Korea (Hyoni Kang), China (Liu Wen), and Japan (Tao Okamoto); the Southeast Asian sector has always been heavily underrepresented in the industry. Enter Filipino newbie Charlene Almarvez, a 16-year-old who has been charming editors with her sweet personality and doll-like features. Almarvez’s major breakthrough happened last year when she became the first runner-up in the Ford Supermodel of the World contest. Towering at nearly six feet, she made a small but strong debut in February, walking for Diane Von Furstenberg, Sophie Theallet, and Peter Som. Although visa troubles put an end to her Fashion Week adventures in New York, editors at V courted Almarvez for a Richard Burbridge–shot editorial shortly thereafter. A European visa is in the mail now, and we can’t wait to see what Almarvez does next.

How did you get discovered?
I was discovered by a director of Philippine Fashion Week during the parade in our town festival. He asked me if I wanted to be a model and encouraged me and my parents.

You represented the Philippines in the Ford Supermodel of the World contest. How has your life changed since? Do people recognize you?
I haven’t gone home since the competition! But because some press [was] released in my country, people have recognized me. They add me on Facebook and congratulate me. It can feel a bit overwhelming but I’m grateful!

You’ve already walked for some top New York designers and worked with Richard Burbridge. What else would you like to accomplish before the year’s end?
I have a lot of things I want to accomplish, actually! I want to walk shows for big designers, especially in Europe, and continue to shoot for great magazines and fashion brands. I just have to get my visas for Europe first!

What are some of your favorite Filipino restaurants, stores, etc., in New York?
My favorite restaurants in New York are Grill 21 and Krystal’s in Queens. They sell different kinds of Filipino viands and sweets. When I go there, I feel like I’m home in my country or like I’m in a movie scene in which a Filipino is traveling abroad.

If modeling never came into the picture, what would you be doing?
I would probably be continuing my studies in business or becoming a professional volleyball player.

What do you think of this breakout model?

If you thought running in heels was hard, try squatting in them.

Apparently, there’s a growing number of women who are so fed up with it — that is, the act of going to a sketchy dive bar, having to use the sketchy bathroom after a few too many vodka tonics, and, in the process, trying desperately not to let flesh touch sketchy toilet seat — that it warranted the production of an interesting new fashion accessory.

Toletta, the world’s first premium public toilet seat cover, has just been developed to save women from the dreaded toilet seat squat.

But, you are probably asking, how is this product any better than ever-so-delicately placing scraps of toilet paper squares along the seat?

According to the Toletta site, it’s made of soft, 3-ply patented tissues that are 20 percent larger and 42 percent thicker than other brands. The covers protect against germs, are biodegradable, and they come in small purse-size travel packs in two super-cute colors (pink and blue)! Perfect fit for that discreet little clutch of yours.

How do you handle nasty public bathrooms? Would you invest in Toletta?

The days of getting all done up to fly are long gone, but what do you throw on if you want to make it through a day of traveling with your style intact, wondered What To Wear reader Dita? Well…

I have a go-to traveling-outfit formula that’s never failed to keep me comfortable, cute and warm in cramped, sub-arctic airplanes. First, I know I’ll be wearing either the Alice & Olivia knit pants that are constructed like jeans that I got about four years ago, or the similar ones from 7 For All Mankind I picked up last summer. They’re like leggings but not so schlumpy—and amazingly comfortable.

On top, it’s all about layers that I can keep warm in during the flight and peel off when I make it to my destination. In summer that usually means I’ll wear a cute cami, throw a grandpa cardi on over that and stuff a big scarf I can wrap around my neck for extra warmth into my bag.

Last, I always wear easy-to-slip-off-and-on flats. Never let it be said I was the one who held up the security line because I couldn’t get my boots off. Right now I’d go for something open-toe and bright.

Except for a pair of cool shades, I usually skip accessories—again, who wants everyone at security shooting them death looks—but I keep some in my carryon in case I make a stop or two between my destination airport and the hotel. (Oh, and I usually throw a pair of shorts or a skirt that will go with the cami, an extra pair of underwear and my makeup in there too, in case my luggage gets lost. They’ve come in handy a few times!)

Do you wish people would dress up more to fly?

Imagine girls running around the mall with giant pink or enormous Twilight vampire eyes. That’s what the world is apparently coming to thanks to a new breed of contact lenses that makes peepers look abnormally large a la the anime-inspired eyes Lady Gaga wore in the “Bad Romance” video.

According to The New York Times, circle lenses are contacts made to cover not only your iris but part of the white part of your eyes to make them look big and doe-like. They come in both regular and unexpected colors, some with special designs on them. And they’re gaining popularity like you wouldn’t believe.

But there’s a snag: They’re not approved for the States, so teenagers and young girls are buying them in Asia and Canada from sites like Lenscircle.com and Pinkyparadise.com. And some companies will even let you order your own prescription, which worries eye doctors, who are concerned that people will be wearing the wrong strength for their eyes. In fact, Karen Riley, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., was quoted as saying “Consumers risk significant eye injuries—even blindness.”

What do you think? Is it worth the risks?

<fb:like href='http://blog.stylit.tv/the-best-advice-youll-ever-get-for-wearing-shorts-period/' layout='default' show_faces='false' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

When shorts first came back around last summer, I was stumped. They hadn’t been cool for a very long time–in fact, the last pair I remembered wearing was pleated, khaki, and circa 1997–and I couldn’t quite figure out how to incorporate them into my wardrobe again (something told me the Aeropostale graphic Ts–sleeves rolled up!–and bright red Keds wouldn’t look quite as good this time around). I bought a pair anyway, because y’know, I can’t resist trends and I love a good wardrobe challenge, and they sat in my drawer unworn for a few weeks. After watching a parade of chic girls wearing shorts on the street in Manhattan, I finally honed in on the one thing that would really make them work for me: Pretend they’re a skirt!

When you’re putting outfits together, treat your shorts (dressy or not–this tip works as well with Chloe’s scalloped silk pair as it does with worn-in denim cutoffs) like they’re your favorite skirt. Would you wear your favorite skirt with a blazer, platform peep-toes, and a cute clutch? Then wear your shorts with that (Beyonce did! And 70% of you thought it was a Do). Would you wear your favorite skirt with a sexy flowing top, loads of fabulous jewelry, and an embellished sandal? Then wear your shorts with that (this Best Dressed Reader did, and the “How cute!” comments came rolling in). Would you wear your favorite skirt with a crisp white blouse, a sophisticated belt, opaque tights, and the perfect pair of pumps? You get the idea.

Does this little bit of advice given you the confidence to finally try out the new dressy take on shorts?
